Hi Guys
I am currently discussing a drive with a client whos has given me the specifications he would like the work carried out. I would like your opinions so I can show him what the experts throughout the country think.
He wants me to dig out 14 inches deep, lay seperation sheet, lay type one scalpings, lay 6mm clean chippings, lay grit sand then lay a 80mm standard buff block, all for domestic use.
I recommended, dig out 300mm (more than enough) lay Seperation sheet, lay 200mm type one scalpings (compacted in 100mm intervals)40mm grit sand and 60mm block.
I do not want to influence anybody's opinions so please leave your feedbacks so I can show him please.

what are the 6mm clean chippings for?
that would be used in a permeable drive way
what you have described lou would be good enough for any domestic use up to 7.5 tonner
the 80mm blocks are only really for industrial estate car parks

And scalpings? Thats basically quarry waste!

All you can do is give him your recommendation, which is more than adequate for domestic. If he wants to press on with his specification (which will cost more money) then do it but make sure your paperwork is in order so he has no come back if it all goes wrong.
Feedback for customer:
Don't need 6mm chippings, they're used for permeable driveways because they have no fines so the water can seep through.
Use type 1, don't use scalpings.
80mm is for commercial use, with forklifts, lorries etc 50mm works fine for domestic, for a little bit of extra money 60mm is worth it over the 50s.

Same as the above, 80mm blocks is overkill on a domestic drive, also as said above unless the blocks are permeable then there is absolutely no need for the 6mm clean.
As Carberry said, if he does go with his own spec, get something in writing saying that hes requested it.

Is your client German?
In Germany, regulations stipulate minimum 80mm blocks for DOMESTIC application.
Just thought i would share this with you out of interest

I would price it he way your client wants, minus the chippings. Of course let him know the chippings are a waste of money

Forgot to say the scalpings are type one, I get so use to just calling them scalpings.

i and most of my suppliers still call it MOT
I cannot remember using it once in the 80s,we use to lay hardcore then batter it with a 14lb sledge

he is clearly thinking of permeable spec'. if that's what he's asking for i would price it accordingly. there plenty of storage for water beneath the paving. i. would be asking if he wants a carrier pipe installing for excess water

I know rates alter up and down the country, but what would you be looking at to pave a drive 164 sqm, I have to construct the drainage from scratch as there is none in the drive. I have to supply all materials and lay.

I would like your views on the quote I have given my client. Its 164sqm of standard 60mm buff block, excavated 300mm of drive, drainage to be put in, layed on separation sheet, 200mm type one, 40mm grit sand. I have priced it at £41 sqm............ cheers chaps

that +vat? you supplying materials too or is that labour only?
