In reading the website about inset manhole covers, it seems to suggest that after contructing most of the paving, the manhole cover is the last thing to be istalled to ensure the correct level with the rest of the paving.

However, my manhole is right at the edge of the driveway and will have to form part of my edging course and will therefore have to be installed first.

Has any one else had to do this first and were there any particular problems? Or any tips to ensure the correct level is achieved.

It's a fairly common problem but one that is easily solved, because the level of the edge course is known. You simply construct your frame and cover so that it lies 3-6mm below the required level and infill with your paving as part of the edge course construction sequence.

The reason ironwork is usually left till last when located within the field of a pavement is that the level is often a little vague until the blocks are placed, so rather than guesstimate the required level, a more accurate level is obtained from the paving once it's laid.
