I have a shared drive and between myself and neighbours we have approx 300m2 of tarmac which although cracked in places is firm and not generally crumbling away.

I have approached them with the idea of using some form of gravel applied over a tack coat.

Now its been a while since i used tack coat and gravel, what is the correct type of tack coat i need, i know its K something?

I also would like to use a nice gravel as i hate shingle, i am thinking a very thin layer of 6mm granite chippings spread to approx 20mm would be ideal. Does anyone here see any problems with 6mm? The only thing i could see is potential turning to dust issues but as its a very hard stone i reckon we would be ok?
I reckon 6mm is perfect as your going to get a hell of a lot of it actually making contact and sticking as opposed to 20mm for instance, there wont be any sinking into the stone and i am guessing none getting stuck in tyres and dragged halway around essex

And the biggest question i can't answer is how much coverage would 1 tonne of 6mm gravel of any type do? i am guessing at 30m2 at 20mm?

Cheers and any other nice reasonably priced gravels suggested would be great.

Tack coat and gravel???

You might aswell throw your cash down the nearest drain!

This (at best) is surface dressing work (the cheapest and nastiest surfacing work)

I would approach a proper surfacing team who can carry out surface dressing works.

I only really do paving but have done this before with good results and have not had any comebacks.

How comes its not good? What would a proper surface dressing people propose?

cheers

I was just reading this
http://www.pavingexpert.com/gravel01.htm

Tony seems to talk about spreading the gravel straight onto the type one, so i would have thought a proper tack coat onto an existing hardstanding with edgings would be perfect.

I really need to sort the drive out but block paving it is not going to happen due to cost, tarmac also will not be preffered so its looking like gravel (which i actually quite like tbh).
