When resurfacing the existing tarmac edge is chased out so the new surface marrys in with exisitng surfaces and provides a firm edge detail. The width to be chased out varys depending on levels etc. Most of my jobs require this but we are having an argument as to what to put in the specification as a general rule.

What is the minimum width that the exisiting tarmac can be chased out too?

I thought a minimum of 1m my colleague decided on 300mm and we have ended up with 500mm. Do you think that is okay?

300-450mm would be my idea of a minimum. This should provide ample 'width' for the overlay surfacing to be 'feathered out' to finish flush with pre-existing edgings without resulting in the surface looking 'forced', if you know what I mean. At thresholds, I might be prepared to accept an argument for a 1 metre wide 'key' (as these chases are called), but at edges, I think that's possibly too much - unless, of course, the thickness of the overlay is such that a 1m wide chase is necessary to allow the levels to be feathered.
