I've read the articles on sub-bases and see that it states that Type 1 Sub-Base stones/solids should not exceed 37.5mm in size. I presume that is in any direction?
i.e if a stone is 45mm in one direction and 5 mm in another it still shouldn't be in Type 1 grade?
Probably a numpty question but if you don't ask you don't know! Ta.

yes it should, as it is whatever passes through a specific size screen.
Obviously if you had a 50mm x 50mm hole, then a piece say 40mm by 40mm by 100 cold fit through lengthways!

if you are laying say 100 m subbase then if the pieces are too big you end up with voids
as DDD correctly says they may be bigger 1 way but they will have passed through a screen at the recommended size
what makes you ask this ?
