Dear All..
Wholly new to this game. Bit of a DIY idiot but happy to have a go.
My issue. I have a red bitmac drive that accomodates one car. It would appear to have been laid on a bed of concrete that seems relatively thin (the concrete). I want to extend the drive so that it can accomodate two cars. There is not enough money to get someone in to do the job...so I am attempting the very basics myself to make the new section driveable on...and when money allows to either complete the job myself of get someone in.
I have a mini digger coming in a week or two to dig out the soil (driveway slopes down away from house...into street so drainage not an issue).
My question is...
I don't know whether I want to have a new bitmac drive or to have block paving, when the money allows.
I was planning to dig out 200mm or so and fill with type 1 and just simply drive on that until money allows to do more.
I expect a 2+ year delay until improvements can be made and in that time i expect the new section of driveway to be well compacted.
I have been advised that bitmac drives MUST be laid on concrete base to get the best results yet i see from the literature on the website that they are laid onto type 1 sub bases too!
I don't want to have to lift up what I am about to do in a few years. Am I better off laying down a type 1base for 100-150mm and using that...or putting down a concrete base of 100-150mm ...
Basically which sub base is best for later adding either block paving or bitmac.
I am so grateful to the website and any advice you can give
David
