OK, so we know the final job should slope away fro mthe house slightly

At the moment I have plain mud which I need to dig up - at the moment it is slightly sloping tTOWARDS the house, so I will obviously need to remove more the further away I go.

Now I know where I want the top of the TYPE 1 to be at the side of my house, so presumably I can use this as a starting guide and then slope away from there.

Question is how would you slope it properly? The only tool I will have is a 1.2m spirit level as opposed to a laser level

Best Idea (thats not on this website) seems to be, knock wooded pegs into the ground, level them all up and then mark the required height with a pencil and then work to that

Question is, should I knock the pegs in now - then dig down into the mud, or shoudl I rmeove loads of mud, knock the pegs in then build my type 1 UP to a mark?

The other option is of course get a long plank of wood and do it that way - but I am not so sure about this method!

Any thoughts?

Wooden pegs - as use by effing amateurs!

They are a crap idea for all sorts of reasons, but the most important is that they are nearly always left in situ, where they rot, and cause settlement in the paving.

Use steel pins - you can buy a 6m bar of 12m steel and have it cut into 600mm lengths at your local steel stockholder for less than it would cost for a dozen wooden pegs.

Position the steel pins just outside the area to be paved and mark on the required level using a long straightedge and spirit level. Use a taut string line to connect all the pins, and there you have it.

so if your line is at finished paving height you measure down from it thus
slabs/flags ==38-50mm
bedding == 30-45mm
type 1 compacted == 100mm

so when your line is set at finished height you need to dig down roughly 180mm
