OK, say that you want to DIY pave but the project will take a while
If I lay the type 1 down - if it rains shoudl I let it totally dry out before compacting?
How wet can the floor be before it it is not ok to put down the type 1?
Once the type 1 is compacted and down - is it pretty much ok for it to get rained on whilst you are doing your paving?
Does anyone ever put down waterproof material to stop the works area getting wet at all?
I was even considering maiking a tarpaulin tent (which would be pretty big) so it would stay dry and i could work underneath it!

Don't leave uncompacted type 1 it will make a mess, compact it before it get wet,once compacted it will be fine,as long as there is no standing water you can lay the stone no problem, the tent idea is a bit over the top I thinck MSH

Had this problem myself pointing ne dads patio last week 
Just get a sheet of dpm (bklack plastic sheeting) and leave it at the ready for when it rains. As soon as you feel the first spots ,pull the sheet down over the works, then decamp to tiffin in the kitchen.

Type 1 is fine in a pile, unless there is continuous torrential rain for days, and fine once it's been wackered, but it will turn into a pudden if you barrow into place and don't compact it. How much have you got? 7 or 8tonne? If you do a manageable section, say 15-16m2 and get the wacker on it before moving on, you'll not need to worry.

i will probably compact the type one and then do the atcual paving over a period of weeks. i iwll probably cover it up when i am not doing it - sound ok?

Not much point in covering it once compacted,the rain won't hurt it once compacted,trying to cover it will be a devils job to stop water puddling under a joint in a sheet,then you end up with a local wet spot MSH

i spose the covering is really to make it easier when i want to get back to work the enxt day and the ground will be nice and dry.

Don't do it. The water will go somewhere you don't want. Best to leave it uncovered. The ground doesn't need to be dry; you don't want a quagmire but showers won't do any harm. About the only things we cover are soft sand, cement and freshly pointed paving if there's going to be a downpour!

And a few more coming up! Good job too as the kids are giving us hell being cooped up like they are.

We had the Aco's in already, so it was a simple 'redirection' of the flow into the drain. Nice dry knees the next day
