hi guys, basically im planning to block pave my own driveway and just would like a few opinions and hints as there are many different methods stated online just want to know what is recommended? below is what i plan to do, am i right, or where am i going wrong?
1. excavate area to 200mm
2. compact sub base(earth) and fit weed sheet material
3. lay 100mm of mot1 crusher run and compact
4. sit edge restraints on a bed of 50mm cement and haunch the rear
5. lay weed sheet
6. lay 35mm of sand and compact
7. lay 20mm sand and screed level
8. lay blocks
9. compact area
10. lay joint sand and re-compact area
does this sound about right? i know this probably seems the very basics to most of you, but im hoping if i get the basics right then i will create a drive which looks good and lasts long!
thanks in advance for any guidance and opinions recieved

Hi there you're pointing in the right direction but there are a few things that a not quite right.
1. Excavate area to 250mm if it's a driveway.
2. Compact the subbase but a weed membrane is useless and not necessary. If you are building over soft clay then think about a geotextile fabric to spread the weight and prevent contamination of the type 1. Weed and geotextile membrane are very different products.
3.Use min 150mm.
4. If it's a kerb then fit before stoning up if it's a block edge restraint put half the type one in compact fit edge then top up type 1 to final level.
5. not needed.
6. Sand should be a max of 35mm when compacted not 55mm it's too deep. Sand up in one go not in layers if you are too low after compacting scratch the sand with a rake to give the top up sand a key.
7.
8. Aye
9. Aye
10. Aye
Good luck. :p

ive got a fairly good idea what im doing now just still need to be a bit clearer on a few things before starting.
if the sub base is to be 150mm when fully compacted what depth should it be before i compact it im guessing it will compact down 10mm or so in which case do i lay it at 160mm?
do i lay the sand at 50mm and compact it down to 35mm, after its compacted do i lay the blocks directly on it or rake some loose sand across the surface before bedding in blocks?
what is the best method for mixing the concrete for the bedding for the edging course?

Please look at the rest of the site, every answer is contained within it, and before you ask about the tyre marks on your new driveway please see previous posts.
Sealants info is also on site and previous posts.
Mix in a mixer.
Hope this helps
