Hi, new to this!wonder if someone can help me. wanting to make a hard standing (economically) on an area of ground at side of house, at present grass and getting chewed up. my idea is to dig out and put a 100mm sub base of stone dust rollered, then painted with a tack coat and to this add some coloured stone chippings and roller in, can you tell me if this would work as a simple roll on roll off surface, thanks

Basically you get what you pay for.
The stone chipping wouldn't last very long as the base would be liable to scuff up.
Have a look at the main web site here site map and have another think.

Hardstanding usually means a bound surface. There are two principle methods of binding a surface: bitumen and cement. Bitumen bound is what is known as "Tarmac"; cement bound is better known as "Concrete".
Laying a flexible (ie: unbound) sub-base and then using a tack coat is a complete and utter waste of time. The sub-base id too flexible to offer adequate support to the tack coat. Further, tack coat is the wrong product - what you're thinking of is "Tar & Chip", but this, too, requires a fairly firm and regular substrate: a flexible sub-base would not be adequate.
Your cheapest and simplest option is concrete and you can read all about that option on this page.
