Hi all, just wondering if i have to run over the paving with the compactor after i have laid it. It never looks as good ever after i have done it. Could it be down to the size of the plate compactor im using ?I have a patio to do in (lift and relay) in what looks like hand made bricks, so am wary of doing this. I have seen it done on one occasion (sweden), where they spread the fine sand over the paving and then hose it down with water let it dry out and do it again,and they dont use the compactor. Whereas i'm used of spreading the sand over the paving and brushing it in ,then running over it with a compactor.
So my question is , does one HAVE TOO use the compactor ?
and if not, is it only on foot paths and such areas which dont recieve heavy traffic ?
they seem quite uniform,so i dont think that will be a problem,im just thinking if it looks good laid,can i use the method i mentioned, or would you still recommend going over it with a whacker ?
I'd *always* use a compactor. It's not just evening-out; it helps identify any low/high spots and ensures that the whole of the pavement is structurally competent, not just the bits that get trafficked.

Is it better to use a lighter whacker . the one is use is quite heavy, does that make any difference? as i dont own a light one.
No: a heavy one is what you want. The BS requires a plate of at least 80Kg. Those comedy plate compactors that can be lifted by one man and struggle to flatten turf are no use at all for paving work.
