Hi

Hooray!!! I am finally finished digging after 5 weekends at it and I am now ready to lay my sub base, I noticed that Sean on my last post re: tree roots you said "make sure I compact before and after laying the sub base"
I have scoured the main website and it says to compact after the sub base but doesnt mention before, do I need to compact the sub grade with a wacker plate before I lay the sub base or just make sure it is compact manually?

Ps Silly question I know but I have been told Wacker plates are really difficult to manage - I am 5ft 3 and 9 and a half stone will I be okay with this or is it just people trying to scare me off ?

if you have a wacker then it is best to do the subsoil as you would of loosened it up with your dig. as long as everything is level you should be ok with the wacker. good luck.

Ange, you should always comact the excavated area prior to installing the hardcore. Try hiring a reversible whacker plate. A bit heavier but most come with wheels and you can go forward and reverse with the flick of a wrist. (in hindsight maybe i shouldnt of mention a reversible plate to a lady!!!!!). Goodluck.

Finally after a couple of weekends of good weather
I have managed to get to the laying of bricks Stage just thought I would post some photies for you to look at I am made up with how things are going so far!
Just want to say I couldnt have done this without this site it has been a godsend and I have really enjoyed this little project
Not quite there yet but will post photos of the finished job

hopefully I will make the DIY projects page

PS ... Dave yes I have developed some muscles but in fairness I was only digging at the weekend

But my greatest achievment is the fact that I havent even broken a nail yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!
