Hi folks,

My first post and I'm already asking questions :)

Instead of slabs I'm thinking of laying a block paved patio. It's a quite small L shaped setup so 5x4 or so but not that wide in places (I.e. would look a bit daft using slabs)

Anyway. I've read up and a number of places suggest using 100mm hardcore + 50-65mm sand compressed etc as a base but as far as I can see this is for drive ways.

Would the same really apply for a patio ? I've read in one book that providing the ground is compressed well enough that 65mm sand will be good enough.

The ground is mainly clay based where I live which makes it real awquard to dig but incredibly strong once its compressed if that helps.

Some advice would be great folks. The most action the patio would see is a wheel barrow and perhaps my motorbike every now and again.

Whats your thoughts folks ?

Cheers for your help !

drainage could be your main problem with clay..there have been many posts about this subject if you search the archives. Bestof luck..at least it looks like we might be getting some reasonable weather soon:D
