Basically my brother wants me to do his drive for him. I've done a lot of slabbing and block paving before and am competent, but just never done or had an opportunity to do a gravel drive. He just wants some nice (probably grey) sharp gravel, I guess around 20mm size.
At the moment it's a scrappy, pea shingle size gravel drive. It was probably last done 20 odd years ago and just looks crap now, a lot of the gravel has moved/ dissappeared etc. There is a slight slope at the top of the drive but nothing major. Now the base does seem fairly solid to be honest, there is a tiny amount of rutting in places and the odd small pothole, but overall doesn't seem too bad.
My question is, what is the base usually used for a gravel drive mentioned above? Will I have to dig up the existing and use sufficient crushed hardcore, mot etc? Or as the existing has been there for a number of years and doesn't seem too bad, obviously remove all old gravel, patch it up where needed, and then just spread new gravel out on top?
Thanks in advance!
