Hi we have had a few quotations within the past week. The fees have varied from contractor.

One quoted Â£1400 and the next Â£3000!!

Each give their reasons for their prices and they all say that they are the best.

What I would like to know is what base is best? The Â£3000 contractor told us that they use Pink something that does not sag and then sets between the hardcore.

I am lost.

What layers do I need to achieve a hard wearing drive for 2 cars.

Hardcore
Sand
Blocks
etc

by pink, I think he means "Cornish red" which is proper, quarried type 1 limestone...you are therfore single handedly plundering our planet's scarce resources and could be termed an "eco-rapist"... :p

only kidding, the stuff they do quarry in Berks and southern england in general does have a red hue, coming a bit more east to places like hollingbourne it gets much lighter. The stuff that makes it "set" is the fines, however, you should ask the Â£1400 contractor if the subbase he has allowed for is a type 1...if it is then it's likely to be a blend or a crushed concrete, which if certificated, will be fine to use.

The most important thing is that it's type 1, and at least 100mm of it. The sand will be 40-50mm (depending on how up to date they are with sand 'thinking') and the blocks will either be 50 or 60mm. Get references you can speak to and drive by and a written guarantee, a proper contractor will have be pleased to provide either.
