We are just installing a 70m drive and need to find what you guys think about this....

We have excavated the old concrete drive, and it appears the house has been built on what was an old sand quarry. The surface is therefore what can only be described as a sand/brickdust surface around 2 feet deep. It appears to be quite firm to walk on and I need to know whether you think 6 inches of MOt Type 1 will be good enough as a sub-base, or, infact, if we even need to put doen more than 100mm sub-base anyway

Thanks

Dave

sand is normally a good base for drives as it is fairly non plastic,
are you putting kerbs in?

There are already some retaining kerbs around the edges...

Sand, sand and gravel, or gravel sub-grades usually have a high CBR, so a minimal sub-base is required. I'd never countenance using less than 100mm.
