from a friend.when whacking the blockes do i need to fit a
rubber mat to the plate because i don't have one.
is it really necessary or will it damage the face of the block?

I've nver used a rubber mat when whacking blocks.....but then I've only ever laid 50/60mm standard blocks, nothing too fancy that *might* require special treatment.
