Need some help with my driveway. I had 15 tonnes of type 1 MOT delivered and due to the shape of my driveway! Had to get bags and hand ball it around. When placing it around the drive I think I have created areas where the type 1 is completely made up of the larger stones and other areas where it is more granular. When I whacked it I now have some areas very well compacted but about 50% where the hacker has simply levelled the areas of bigger stones. There is no bind, and the type 1 moves fairly easily when stood on.
To avoid heavy raking or having to lift areas, is there a more granular fill I could buy to spread and compact these areas.
Also, what type of max size should the stones in type 1 be? Some of mine where up to 100mm - practically boulders.

How big is the area you spread the hardcore?
No type 1 is a grading of 0-40mm

75sqm worked on 5sqm per ton at 100mm depth.

if you have 100m lumps its not type1 , it should be 40mm---dust.
the stony areas, the best thing is to rake them around to get the fines up into the top, it sounds like hard work but it the best way or dig it out and replace with more usable stuff, i suspect it not a quality material being used, MSH

Thanks MSH, was hoping I could have bought some of the fine stuff on its own to do the job.

15t will only do 60sqm at 100mm, personally i would make the effort to at least get the base right, hire a heavy duty ride on roller for the day, compact the hell outta the crapy hardcore, check levels then top with real type 1 from a reputable supplier, who can provide a certificate for the type 1.
Dusting the surface with fines as recommended by msh will only make it look pretty.

wont adding whin dust fill the smaller voids?
by my reckoning 1 M3 equals 2 tonnes of gear so 15 tonnes should do 75m at 100MM thick
or am i missing something?

15t is the amount needed, there is no need to hire a twin drum roller for a area that size a good wacker plate is fine, but going over the area 6/7 times in different directions,
the whole issue is filling a void between some areas with no fines he still has 100m total depth, so by raking in some fines will allow tight compaction, as this is a small localised area i see know reason to stop you doing it that way MSH

Helluva job to dig up and start again. I'm with msh on this, blind the area with 6mm to dust, preferably dry, and wack it. Give it a dousing with the hosepipe and wack it again, top up and wack again. Ideally this would have preferably been done in layers but......
I'd rather have 10T of stone with little fines than one that is mostly fines.
Edit: Meant to add. If you need to bring the level of the base up further and to fine tune the profile you may find it easier to use 20mm to dust providing it's only a couple of inches.
