Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I looked and couldn't find this topic.

I'm using Unilock Europavers on a walkway (12"x12", 6"x12", 6"x6"). I have two landings separated by 17 feet with a 4.5 degree slope. I've installed the Blocks at the top and bottom landings and JUST REALIZED that the transition at the top and bottom would be sharp. I have a few questions...

1. Is there a trick for a more gentle transition? (If I 'round' it out by making an intermediate angle at the top and bottom, then the intermediate slope will be higher.)
2. I was going to saw cut the blocks to match the angle at the top and the bottom. At the bottom, where the bottom of the blocks won't overlap, do I need to do this (cut them) (the spacing will obviously be larger at the bottom than the top).
3. The block cutting will be a compound cut since the the two landings are offset also. I have a compound miter saw and a hand saw with diamond blade. Any advice on this cut - i.e. how to measure it and get it right the first time?

Now a more novice question:
Patios and walkways I've done in the past I've never left the stone dust soft. I tamp it down (not plate compact), and put the pavers on the top. In this installation I have 5" of sub-base, plate compacted. 1" - 2" of stone dust, tamped and the 2 3/4" blocks. I don't usually plate compact the pavers since I'm afraid I'll break them and haven't left a 'soft' base. Are there any major problems with this approach. (of course I put stone dust in between the gaps, and this locks the pavers in place pretty well).

Last Question:
Has anyone put a railing in next to the walkway? What suggestions do you have?

not sure if this will help with the steep sloping ramp but have a look at : http://www.pavingexpert.com/blokbase.htm
look at the transition ramp section

with regards to ramps , i have been doing school work lately so have encountered this
minimum ramp must be 1:12 preferred is 1:15 and a ramp over 5 m long must be 1:20
there should be a flat landing top and bottom of at least 1200mm and if the ramp is over 5 m long then there must be 1200 flat rest points every 4.5 m
minimun width is 1000mm
handrail must be 900mm above the slope of the ramp
except when disabled ppl might need a lower one at about 600mm
believe me ramps aint what they used to be
hope this helps

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your answers. I've tried something similar to the Transition Ramp and it seems to look okay. Too much of an S-shaped cross section would make the slope in the middle too steep, so I compromised. So I laid all the pavers today and it seems okay.

For the abutting joints, I guess I'll cut the pavers, the old fashioned way - by eye as I usually do.

Now I'm thinking of using this mix that starts out as sandlike, but after sweeping it into the joints it sort of hardens. No more weeds. Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks again - Cheers

The product I used is called "Joint Lock Sand" "A Polymer Modified Finishing Sand". It's very fine and it seems to solidify after a day or two. It filled the joints very nicely and looks good so far.
