Sub-base compaction rate

This is my first post in this forum.
Inspired by this website, I have decided to extend my driveway (block paving) & I have already excavated, bedded & haunched the kerbs. I have filled in the dig with type1 but not compacted yet, which is this weekend's job.

My question at what rate does type 1 compact?
In other words, how deep should I lay type1 to achieve a compacted depth of 100 mm? 140 mm? more?

Lastly, should I use a mat for the plate vibrator on Brett Theta concrete blocks (60 mm) or can I do without?

Difficult to say as varies with soil and product. Trial and error will tell

Just to give further info:
Sub grade is firm & dry.
I have laid around 130-140 mm of type 1 which is all that I had. If the pros out there think that I would need a deeper layer of type 1, then I'll get some more before I hire the wacker plate, ready for topping up if needed.
BTW, Would ballast be an acceptable substitute for type1?

I would also appreciate any advice regarding the use of a mat.

There is no hard-and-fast rule for how much any given depth of sub-base material will compact, for many (if not most) of the reasons given for the same problem with screeded laying courses on this page

Hi Tony

Just wondered if your excel-based calculator takes into account compaction rates...ie what fill depth does it allow for a compacted 100mm sub-base?
