Hi,

As a result of reading your site I find myself looking at paving all over the place.

I live in a new development (1.5 years old) and I noticed that the block paving in the street has gaps bewteen all the pavers.

It looks like they have not pointed it with kiln dried sand, i don't think that it is that it has sunk in, as I can't see any anywhere.

Do you think I should get onto them and complain that it is unfinished?

Other than it filling up with other crap, will it cause any problems?

It depends on the type of paving. Most block paving is intended to have the joints filled to the top with a jointing sand. The two commonest exceptions are rigid block paving, which has mortar joints, and permeable paving, which appears to have empty joints, but they are actually part-filled with a coarse grit.

Some new residential estates are paved using permeable systems as part of "Agenda 21" and the push for SUDS. The surface water is intended to flow through the paving and from there be dispersed over the site via a specially constructed sub-base, rather than sent into the already-overburdened SW systems.

If you can get a picture of the paving in question, I might be able to suggest just what type it is, but I wouldn't start worrying just yet.
