All the stones I am looking at do not seem to match the calculators online.

I am looking at these 6 sizes (all in cm):
28x28
28x56
42x56
56x56
83x56
112x56

anyone suggest a method or calculator?

Can the stone manufacturer or supplier not help you out with quantity calculations... they're taking your money after all!

If not, you could simply use the area (in square metres) as a guide and choose amounts of each flag size based on that (maybe using more of the large stones than smaller ones - this tends to look better I think). For example, you could choose to use 30% of the 112x56, 20% of 83x56 etc. and then work it out from there.

However, a more accurate method would be to create a random layout plan. Tony describes how to do this on his Random Layouts page. It basically involves drawing your site to scale and then gradually filling it in using the scaled flag sizes you have available (and following the rules about what situations should be avoided). How you do this is up to you - on a computer using a CAD or drawing package is easier but you could even do this with paper and scissors. Tony also has a link to a design service who can do all the above for you and deliver a nice coloured a professional looking laminate plan in addition to an electronic copy.

If you don't have a plan however and simply start laying, it will all go horribly wrong :;): .

For reasons mentioned elsewhere, I don't publish all of the calculators I have for generating quantities for random layouts. I can do custom requests, but there's no way I'm going to publish all of my little gizmos and gimmicks for bone-idle, tight-fisted manufacturers and distributors to rip-off.

If you're buying flags from them, they should be able to tell you what's needed, and give you some sort of layout. However, virtually none of them do. I know only 2 suppliers that will provide quantities and layout plans - the rest of 'em just want your money and none of your hassle.
