Hello,

I'm a DIY'er about to embark on a 'small ish' (50sqM) Block paving driveway (medium/heavy use) project. We have excavated to 350mm below the DPC and found pretty good quality clean sand. The Sub base 100mm of MOT1 is about to be put down (over a geo textile). Given we found sand it is this good or bad thing? I was considering compacting this first before puttting down the geotextile and then the MOT. Is this over/underkill.

Sand is usually a good sign. It means the sub-grade is well-drained and will probably have a relatively high CBR value.

However, if your driveway is planned for medium-heavy usage, as you state, think about increasing the sub-base thickness to 150mm, rather than 100mm, which is the minimum requirement for light vehicular traffic.
