Tony , firstly , excellent site which has got me through all the stages until i'm now ready to put in the sub base and roller down BUT a little confused about how roller/plate compaction forces are shown . Most hire companies talk of compaction in kN ? and don't know how this relates to kg/m shown on the site. Am laying a 150mm sub base of limestone GSB so presumably need something a bit meaty for the base and lighter for the sand and blocks ? Also can i lay a 150 base in one go or would you advise laying in two 75mm levels

If you tell them what it is you're planning to do, the hire co's will recommend a suitable model.

It's a bit awkward for me to use kN to prescribe plate compactors because there is some problem over how different companies define kN for their particular products, which is why the "official guidance" uses the kg/m² force. However, I'll have a look at that again and see if I can make it a bit clearer.

Try to get a plate that's at least 400x400mm in plate size - there are som smaller than that, but I'm not convinced they do a thorough job when it comes to consolidating a sub--base.
