Would you do it?

We plan to block pave our drive with fairly expensive tumbled setts, but are having a small extension built out the back next year. Cant decide whether to go ahead now, or whether said drive will be spoilt with a small digger, skips and building materials going across it.

Any opinions?

'Drive' at moment is mud bath! so looks terrible.

Ideally, I'd leave the driveway work until your extension is over and done with, but, if you want to have summat decent out front in the meantime, it should be possible to cover the driveway with decking sheets (2.4x1.2m sheets of 18mm plywood) when the builders come to do the extension.

Are these "fairly expensive tumbled setts" stone or concrete?

Setts would be concrete - Tegula from Marshalls or Antique from Toppave.

Think we'll wait a bit then.

Both of those products are 'reversible' which means that, if they were laid before the extension work, and then they got stained with concrete, plaster, paint or any other 'wet' product, they could be lifted, flipped over and relaid. However, any problems such as channelisation (ruts) or collapse due to excessive loads, are not quite as simple to fix, so I'd still prefer to leave the paving until the extension is complete.
