Hi Tony I am aware that I will need a membrane but I am not sure what type I will need. I am also assuming that the membrane should be layed first before any of the hardcore is put down.

What makes you think you need a membrane? Have a read of the Membrane FAQ before deciding whether you really do need one or not. If you do, it should go between the sub-grade and sub-base, as explained in the FAQ.
