Hi there, I have been reading articles and general information on this website the past few days, and have learned more than I thought I ever would on slabs and concrete. We are in the process of having our driveway concreted, and I have asked the same builder to qoute for laying some slabs in our back garden (22m^2). The builder said that he would lay the slabs on top of the existing surface as it was fairly good, which should save alot of time and money on labour. The price he qouted to do the job (depending on the type of slabs we choose!), would be around the £600 mark, which seems alittle high to me. Would anyone care to comment on what they would consider to be a fair qoute?

ok look at it like this, how much labour does he charge a day, what is there at the moment, are there slabs already there? does he need a skip on site and how much are the slabs u are installing. if i were doing the job for u i would explain to u like this i want £220 a day a labour for me and a work mate, slabs cost lets say £280 i need a 5yd skip £60 i need sand and op £50 and u have a total price of what this adds up to, now all u need do is ask him to break it down for u like this, and make sure the slabs cost what he says they do and u will see if he is over charging or not it really comes down to the slabs i can buy a 600x600 for as little as a £1.00 but a top range slab will cost me over £10.00 for a 600x600. also what is the sub grade like where the slabs are to laid?

600 quid for 22m² is a good price - uit's less than 30 quid per square metre, and you don't get much for that sort of money, as Suki has shown in his post above.
Obviously, the materials can have a big effect on the cost, so you need to check just what type of flags he's planning to supply, as I'm guessing that he's quoting you for a cheap 'budget' type product that might not be to your liking.
