Did something to my neck on Tuesday. Didn't notice it at the time. Felt uncomfortable Tuesday night. Woke up Wednesday in loads of pain. Thought going to work would loosen it up but it aggravated it and on Thursday I couldn't go in. So I've had an unexpected 4 days with my feet up, sorta.

Feeling better now, 80+% mobility back in my neck all over last night that improvement happened so hopefully by tomorrow I'll be 100%. Up until last night the pain was the same which was worrying. Started to think I'd done something more major to myself. Anyhow 3 days off in 3 years is pretty good going but still a major pain in the ass cos I'm wall to wall booked with work now till December and it's put me right in the shit.

How do you guys manage with sickness etc?

Which course is that? Is it the one where I fitted out a Travis Perkins with 2 broken ribs and a sprained ankle. Or the one where I broke my back and was told I'd need to find a desk job but went back to labouring 6 months later. Not sure which is most suitable?

...Agree with Mick man up. Best thing for strain is immediate rest for a day with painkillers, hot/ cold compress on injury, then get mobile. Not trying to steal your thunder but i have arthur ritus, havs, back pain etc: as i'm sure most guys in our game have also. I never miss a day for it and have just done a 7k mud run. Came 189th out of 1500 and first in my category of 60 to 69. When i feel like you do i refer back to a tv prog' and one of my hero's ...the boy who's skin fell off ( or summet like that ) now there was a man in pain but still got off his arse to lobby parliament, it killed him in the end. Back pain, neck pain nothing compared to him.

I see! That's the answer I was looking for. I just don't know how to deal with a strain properly. Rest it, work it or what. Either way I did go to work the next day and it damn well didn't help. 20% of my job is forcibly smashing a graft into the ground to break roots and there's no way of not aggravating an injury doing that. Wheeling barrows, lifting heavy things perhaps can help cos it's controlled, increases blood flow, warms you up etc. I can see how it would help but that's not the issue, it's the vibrating tools and mattocking etc. that does you in I think.

Just pisses me off when you're after some advice and some smart ass says "man up" How often I've seen that same so called "tough guy" turn and run when it truly is time to be a man.

not as often as I have seen narrow back twats like you step up to the ring and get knocked flying, pity you didn't take in the context it was meant - as a joke

OK fine then. My apologies if you were joking. It just annoys me when people say work when you have injuries, be a man.

I'll let the twat comment go....

Don't take it to heart forest Mick is old school like me, we tend to forget we had days off, any excuse would of done :;): :)
At the end of the day with are cuntstruction workers
Not dr's, or physios. We can offer advice, empathise, sympathise and criticise but we are all individuals with different tolerences to pain, i have a high tolerance to pain i think to do with hard childhood, big family to contend with and going hungry a lot. Maybe your way was best, at least it won't result in accumated stesses and strains. Good luck n8 wish you well :)

Yeah fair enough.

But I do work with injuries all the time. Minor ones. I've got an l2-l4 spinal fuse and the fuse isn't right. It's put a lateral tilt in my pelvis which puts extra strain only left hip and knee and right upper torso and neck. I did go to work the following day cos it was the last day of a contract and really needed to get money back on materials. Took pain killers and sprayed that ice stuff on but the following day after I was totally F****d.

My question really was more regarding scheduling and stuff really. I'm booked till December and laying about these last few days has really stressed me out. This happened just as I was really squeezing my limits. Always the way.....

be philosophical FB
the sun will still come up if you are in bed recuperating
the only thing i would say is to ring your customers and explain why you are not there
nothing worse than no shows

ta, I've done that. It's all worked out OK ish. Customers have been cool and got back a day today. Everything went perfect. Just got a couple of exterior painting jobs that are a major thorn in the side. Not taking any more on unless customer has 100% flexibility and no deadline inside of 3 months. Don't need them anyway. And they don't really pay!

Neck hurt a little this morning and a little more by the end of the day but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna wake up 100% tomorrow. Touch wood there is a tomorrow. Should never say that sort of thing.. the reaper an all!

A good sports message costs 30 quid and could be the best money you ever spent. I was a mess a few years back after repeatedly manning up and I wasn't fit for anything. Everything in my neck , back and glutes was out of shape. He beat the shit out of me over a few sessions and now i'm in the shape of my life. If u know any high level cyclists, triathletes or rugby players then they will know a good therapist. I go every 6 weeks now during the racing season and have lost 3 stone because I can train properly again.
Manning up just means you're going to spend your retirement as a cripple so always nip it in the bud. :-)

Yeah Pablo I do. She is awesome. I see her 5 - 10 times a year.

I started going about 3 years ago cos I was in so much pain I didn't know what to do. Had a see her a few times initially and now just when I need. But walking in in pain and walking out 45 mins later without pain was an eye opener for me.

My issues were compounded by tight hams and glutes pulling on the lower back. She does massage but also contorts me into positions I never knew existed and hey presto I am loosened and straightened back up. I try to do a bit of weight lifting too cos believe it or not, deadlifts and squats etc. really help my back and even out my posture but I am too knackered after grafting and I'm working weekends too so have been for 2 weeks now.

Def over due a visit to the sports therapist. Just haven't got the time at the moment. Business is going really great but yeah I just don't have ANY time at all. Gonna see her in December.
