Hi,

I moved into a new build and had the usual blank canvas garden. I have removed a lot of the grass and have installed a new patio. The colour being the market stone sahara.

I am now at the stage where I want to gravel round all the borders of the patio and grass and I am having difficulty selecting a gravel for it. I need around 8 tonne and dont want to buy some and decide it doesnt look right.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice gravel that would set off this type of sandstone patio? Should I go for a contrast or one that has the same colours in it? I thought about a 20mm grey slate border but would like an experts opinion.

There is a big variation in prices on 'fancy' gravels , slate etc:
I've just done mine 2 bulk bags of 20ml ordinary gravel £65 delivered
and looks good, back garden.

christy if its not being driven on then small rounded pebbles look nice, slate too
8 tonnes will cover 100m2 at the correct depth
have you got your sums right?

Yeah I've drawn it all out on CAD to full size so the sizes are bang on. Was thinking of the 20mm grey slate but I was looking at the smaller pebbles today and think they would look good too. Just can't decide on a colour or type.

It's a matter of choice Chris, only you can choose colour etc:

my opinion is grey slate would not look right next to this product as market stone sahara contains a lot of colours within the stone but not grey, I have only seen it on line and not up close if you could post a photo it would be most helpful

I do find when all else fails and you cant find a colour to compliment the patio then white pebbles form a beautiful edge to any paving but they are not cheap and you do require 8 ton

I'm trying to upload a pic but can't figure out how to. I'm being asked for a URL but only have pics on my phone.

The colour grey is included in the patio by the way. There's a mix of oranges, greys, browns and purples. Similar to the ones in this link http://www.mkmbs.co.uk/prodb00....mm-3252

i think plum slate might complement the purplish hues in the flags

have you tried your local merchants and just see what their 10 and 20 mm drainage aggregate look slike?

Get some samples from your local merchant, a handful from a bulk bag won't be missed. Put the samples on the patio and live with them for a bit, one will gradually grab your attention.
Nice patio BTW love the bench and the shadows it casts.

Have you dug out enough, textile looks high in some places and will look unsightly as the soil, stone, slate settles ???
Sub soil/sub base needs to be compactced and uniform depth :;):

Thanks. I made the bench at work. I do agree with you that I should get some samples or even small bags just to see what they look like. I think I'll do that at the weekend. I thought about plum slate but when the patio was done and there was still type one round the edges, the grey sort of stuck out for me. My initial thoughts were 20mm grey slate but I've also been looking at rose quartz too. Decisions decisions !
