another poor infant dead at the jaws of a "nanny " dog
I know its an evocative subject but this issue with bull terrier type dogs is like an Gordian knot.
roughly 1 person a year is killed by a dog and 4000 a week require hospital treatment
time for licenses to be brought back i reckon and muzzles in public places
I have been bit multiple times by friends dogs and wont visit people with bull terrier types anymore
IMHO

when i was a kid ,people had *normal * dogs
collies ,setters,Labradors,spaniels
i would hazard a guess that 40% of dogs i see out and about are the *nanny* dogs ,so called because they make great baby sitters according to the eejits that own them
but in fairness any dog can bite so why cant they all be muzzled?
then you get the "my dog likes to run off the lead in the park every day" mob
yeah and i like to take the daughter and her mates there without avoiding dog mess everywhere and being bit by pitstaffmastiffweilers
no dog ever hurt anyone with a proper muzzle on and that is a fact

It's not responsible to leave any dog around a small child unattended. You hear people say. "My bouncer wouldn't hurt a fly". How would they know? I know that people can get very emotive when it comes to dogs but at the end of the day they are animals and while you might think you can control them and predict their behaviour, the fact is you can never be 100% sure what they will do. These complete morons need locking up for leaving small babies around dogs, it makes my blood boil

I know it's not a popular viewpioint, but I've *never* liked dogs. Any dogs. It's a childhood thing and they scare me, even the tubular Jack Russell my younger daughter has. And the macho aggro dogs that always seem to be towing a tattooed numpty behind them are the worst. They aren't pets: they are threats on a lead.
I get stoopid owners who insist that "he only wants to be your friend", but can't understand that I choose my friends very carefully. They take offence when I ask them to put the dog away, as though I've called their child ugly or summat!
One client from years ago insisted that her 14 stone drooling St Bernard was perfectly harmless and that I should just stand there while it lathered me in spittle. I asked her if she liked spiders. She squirmed and said definitely not! Nasty, scuttling, hairy beasties! Horrid!
I offered to introduce her to my pet tarantula*, who 'only wanted to be her friend' and would love to scamper through her hair. She declined, but still couldn't see the point. Why am I expected to endure her pet in me face but she would scream if I went anywhere near her with mine?
* I don't have, and never did have, any sort of spider for a pet, but they don't scare me. I was trying to make her understand irrational fear.

Have to agree with that, although im biased seeing as thats what my dog is, and growing up with working collies.
Alot of people are (wrongly) of the opinion that it is all down to the training, or lack of, that cause these attacks. They are wrong. Every breed has their different traits, as Rab said a collie is fairly easy to train and highly intelligent but a pish guard dog. They can be grumpy and stroppy but they are high energy dogs who like to chase things and herd things up, be it sheep, cows or my son lol.
A Bull terrier is harder to train and not very bright, but a better guard dog, so is naturally more aggressive.
You can train some intelligence into dogs, but you will never suppress the traits of the breed.
As much as you can throw a halter onto a bull and drag him around a showring, you wouldnt let him loose around kids would you?

My better half is of course blind to the biting
If i bit you or a member of your family would your better half turn a blind eye to that? Just because its the family pet doesnt make it ok or excusable.
A biting dog should always be rewarded with a swift dunt from a size 10 steely.

Hate dogs, they are either to small, or to big.
Like the gaffer I don't trust and hate it when their owners assume you don't mind them jumping up you and knocking over tae.
But having said that some of the restaurants I have visited and served some up in pretence of a lamb curry have done a good job, nice and tasty.

Most aggressive dogs as far as dog attacks go are actually the smaller breeds like jack russels and chihuahuas because the owners think they are small and harmless so don't put a lot of effort in to training whereas owners of bigger breeds know their dog needs to be well trained. Unfortunately the media only reports on dangerous killer pitbulls.
I would like to see more controls in place like a license to own, license to breed and new laws in place to crack down on irresponsible owners and breeders. Breeders are really annoying me now after I watched the BBC documentary pedigree dogs exposed.

A dog should be a family pet.. hence the collie, lab even a rottweiler or greyhound but a staffy/jack russel (their vicious little things) etc, fighting dogs and just no for a family.
The thing that is common in my opinion only is that most of these dog attacks are carried out by the the dog of a tattoed bam who thinks he's hard because of the dog

a chihuahua never killed anyone
and jack russells for all their tenacity can be silenced with a size 10 (I know this for a fact after being attacked by one)
it seems to me the size of jaw to body ratio is the point of danger
I have had timid/trained dogs most of my life, but obviously in the domestic building game you come across maybe 10 a year
and although some are friendly some just want to get tore into you and that pesky wheelbarrow
