what on earth is going on with food?
I respect the rights of muslims to eat halal food, jewish people to eat kosher food, hindus not to eat beef
and wigginers to eat pies :;):
but why suddenly do lots of major food retailers see fit to sell us food slaughtered under a religion that has zero to do with us?
I am an agnostic when it comes to religion, but fair does to those that enjoy it
but I dont want it shoved down my throat, thank you very much
is there nothing these faceless PLCs wont do to try and grab a few more sales?

This isn't much of a story though all our meat is stunned before being killed anyway by law
So the exporters in New Zealand to get a bigger market have a prayer on a pa system and a token Muslim on the site and they can sell it to any one or not have the PA system and reduce who they sell it to by more than half.
The meats the same little old baa baa mixed heritage sheep doesn't give two hoots it's dying anyway, this is just another example of pandering to religion for ease
Also it's been picked up by the sun and daily mail as more anti Islam/Muslims/ immigrants fuel for the fire.
Every Donna kebab you've eaten when swaying will have been halal well maybe if it was actual human grade

yeah I understand why the kiwis do it,their biggest market is Indonesia and south east asia so its business for them
but why are we pandering to 1 religion that only makes up 5% of the population
my daughter's school is the only school in luton that does serve halal food (its a catholic school)
summat wrong here

All food needs to be labelled properly and should be able to track it at every stage so we avoid incidents like this.
There is an opt out clause in EU regulations for religious beliefs so, not all the animals are stunned, FSA has it at 81 per cent of sheeps and goats and 88 per cent of poultry (think these figures come from a survey so no doubt a lot of them are lying too). Of the animals that are stunned, it is done with low voltage so a lot of them still end up coming to and thrashing about whilst their throat is cut. With humans doing the cutting of the throat you then end up with the issue with the sheer volume of animals going through, and pressure from management, invevitably many aren't cut cleanly.
Unfortunately it is cheaper to produce halal meat and lets them sell to a wider market so we are getting it forced on us.
Some good documentaries related to the subject (not specifically about halal):

Factory farming methods and forcing religion on us is disgusting and I can't believe it has taken this long for the topic to be brought up.

most wars are over religion, and it comes down to a punch up as to has the best imaginary friend!
As you can tell not a greatly religious individual here.
as for prayers, stunning, or giving an animal a cuddle before you kill it, I couldn't care less!
what I want is good quality meat, at the best price I can get it for!

I can't understand how little empathy there is for the animals. Believe me they don't want to die. I've tried twice and failed twice to be vegetarian (bacon tastes to damned nice) if there was a decent meat substitute I would gladly try again.
Trouble is there's always a Greggs nearby, do a cracking breakfast meal deal, bacon and sausage bap and cuppa coffee £2.
If you've been in a slaughter house and witnessed the killings you may also think twice.

they are bred to die,
any animal we dont eat or cannot use gets wiped out by homo sapiens
wolves ,bears anyone?
foxes and rats seem to get the main brunt of the killing now
I do eat meat ,but even if its well fed and looked after the result is the same
would you rather die happy, die sad, or not die at all?
no brainer really
for some reason the greggs near where we are working is rubbish
they cannot get a cuppa tea right so we gave up on them
