not sure if this is the reason but I know they sold off 4 of their quarries last year for £19 million
Marshalls plc agrees quarries sale
mind you Astley Moss quarry was shite sand anyway and did not compact when using the vibrating plate

dear oh dear I was taking to a guy only this morning and he mentioned the quarry at Brinscall and that the sand is OK and his exact words were "everyone is using it" well it turned out bar me that is
since 2007 its been on a downward spiral with quality, I have not got a clue why they now feel the need to wash grit sand as it was never any issue prior to this for the first 25 years I spent laying paving

I found it is too expensive at Stan Stock and Santime closed years ago, it's now owned by Armstrong's waste disposal as a tip but they have got planning approval to start blasting again at the side of the old quarry
try phoning Benchmark to see if they will do a direct from their supplier, we use the sand out of their yard on a regular basis and its good stuff
