Just got back from a week in Tenerife. While I was out there I had a days fishing on a boat. There were 5 of us on the boat and we had a big rod each fishing on the bottom for stingrays and also a small rod each to catch bait fish with. We'd been there for about 10 minutes when the man from Leicesters big rod took off, he was playing the fish for about 10 minutes before his 150lb line broke!

At that point we all did a bit of a double take. We carried on fishing and about 15 minutes later, the bloke from Scotland's big rod took off. He was plying the fish for about 20 minutes by which point he was absolutely bollocksed and asked if anyone else wanted a go,0. I stepped up and had a go thinking to myself "no problem, I'll pull this effer up". After about 5 mins my back was screaming and my arms were aching. I could have gladly passed the rod to the next person but male pride made me endure the pain for 20 minutes.

Anyway to cut it short, everyone on the boat include the skipper (6 people) had a 20 minute stint trying To hall this leviathan up from the depths. All to no avail, after an hour and a half we reluctantly had to cu the line

How's that for a fishermans tale ? :D

So there is some angry monster of a fish in the sea just off Tenerife with a fishing hook and cut line hanging from its gob???? :p :p

wow that is some tail to tell the grand kids Steve :)

A friend I knew in the 80's was fishing off Tenerife on the bottom like you say, took 20 minutes for the bait to reach the full depth and the same to come up, he got a bite and started to reel the line in and when the fish surfaced all that was on the line was a 200mm head, something had eaten the rest of it during the fight to get it up - I don't like swimming in the sea

I know what you mean Mick. I dont mind swimming in the Med, because its pretty tame. But there are some big fish out there in the proper oceans and the thought of being eaten is not very appealing. I was always a bit nervous in Oz, plenty of sharks out there. Its highly unlikely but I dont think its an irrational fear

think i have told the story before but here goes

1993 went to kenya, went marlin fishing in the pemba channel between africa and zanzibar

strapped in to the seat jaws style

anyway got something big and struggled for 20 minutes
same as mick ,line went slack

pulled a head of a fish out about 5 inches deep (a dorado i believe)

but just behind the head was a cut as clean as you like
looked like it had been guillotined

african skipper says
"big fish eat little fish"

LLL

ps didnt catch any marlin
:(

Got no doubt there are a few rouges in the Med but its never going to have the density or number of species as the main oceans. The meds a tame little pond
