I know many will not be familiar with Dr Brian Shackel, but if you've ever laid block paving for a living, you've probably benefitted from his pioneering work in pavement engineering. I heard this morning that, after a period of illness, Brian passed away over the weekend. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends - Brian was always good company and a compelling speaker.
It's ironic as this coming weekend it is the tri-annual block paving conference, staged in Shanghai this time, and Brian was normally at HUGE presence at these shindigs. I can't go for family reasons, but I'm fairly certain reference will be made to Brian, his life and his passion for pavement construction throughout the world.
We're all a little bit poorer this morning.
