It was character assasination on an epic scale by the police and the fact that it as swallowed by the sun and regurgitated as truth is criminal. Its the sort of thing you may expect in Russia, not in the uk in living memory.
There needs to be a criminal investigation into that policeforce and people need to go to jail. I'm sick and tired of seeing these frauds and cover ups carried out by institutions that we trust. lets see them suffer the consequnces of thier ways like everybody else has too

I was about 14 when this happened but I remember it well although I didn't fully appreciate what happened. Even though it was 23 years ago it may have been 50 years with regards to how different public and government agencies attitudes were compared to now. In those days it took a disaster to change how health and safety was implemented nowadays we do our utmost to cover all bases and eventualities. It was around the same time that Micheal Watson almost died in the ring due to their not being any medical cover at the fight that was the attitude everyone had in those days and it took tragedies like these to get to where we are now if they hadn't happened nothing would've changed and it would probably be about to happen. Hooliganism was such a problem then that the cages seemed like a good solution to keeping them apart so it was easy to blame them for it and everyone was happy to accept it. The cover up is shocking and on such a massive scale it's incredible that the truth wasn't leaked before this. It must be said though that Liverpools Behavior in the Heysel disaster made everything very easy to believe and that's one of the reasons they were contained for so long. At least attitudes have now changed but crimes committed in the past must still be dealt with I doubt we'll see thatcher in chains though.

i was working with lads at the time who went to the game,they were in the middle section and didnt realise anyone had died till later on,they thought people were fainting
as with all disasters of this scale there was a perfect storm of small factors which added up to the tragedy on the day
fans delayed due to road works
liverpool being given the smaller area
exit gate being opened by the police
medical facilities non existant
its a disgrace it was covered up
however as pablo said this was the era of the hooligan and scally ,and many lads that i knew considered it a badge of honour never to pay to get into a ground
I know blokes who were at heysel too and although liverpool got blamed for that, a lot of that was down to poor ground design and the fact it was a hooligan day out for a lot of southerners as well
I myself have been in crushes in the old terrace days and it gets to a point where you cannot do anything except try and keep upright
the fences around the pitches were the biggest problem

As a Liverpool fan for over 30 years, I've always found it hard to discuss Hillsborough without becoming angry, and so I try to keep my counsel. As John Lydon said, "Anger is a (wasted) energy".
Yesterday was a real mix of emotions: sadness, vindication, relief and still a touch of anger. No justice, but for the first time in 23 years, a sense of relief. At last, the rest of the world can see what we have seen since 1989. The world is a better place....
And yet this establishment scum, Bettison, a pitiful excuse of a man if ever there was one, still doesn't get it and insists on maintaining the bollocks he helped dream up. In a statement released today, the nasty little toad crawled from beneath a stone and croaked...
"Fans behaviour, to the extent that it was relevant at all, made the job of the police, in the crush outside Leppings Lane turnstiles, harder than it needed to be."
...words fail me!
This fool is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the ruling classes in modern Britain. They cannot accept responsibility for their own errors, but are always eager to blame those who cannot defend themselves. Bettison was instrumental in the cover-up designed to protect the Police and others in power from being held responsible for the needless deaths of 96 people.
The gong he was given for being a good establishment toady should be stripped from him and he should make one honourable gesture in what remains of his miserable life: resign
