Hi all
Had some timber delivered yesterday, we are re doing the roof of an extension to let us use the top as a walkway to a new flat.
Anyway the spec said C24 which is what was ordered
looking at what was delivered at one end it has
SS
C24
the other end it has
C18

have we been had ? or does it change grade half way down the length ??

thanks Kevin

that is odd kevin
i have had mixed batches some c16 and some c20 but never at different ends?
its the number of knots per metre etc that affect this
contact your supplier and ask them mate

i used to work in a timber yard.
have a look at the the way they are stamped, does it look like they were stamped by a machine as they were cut? or does it look like they were stamped by hand, ie a bit all over the place.
C24 is a very high grade of timber, Irish timder would rarely be graded to this level, usually imported from sweden or there abouts.
usually a lad is trained up in the timber yard to be able to grade timber visually. however he may be influnced by others to up grade the timber.
C24 is very high graded and very strong and should be alot dearer than c16. in most cases it is overkill.
are the spans very long?
designer may be covering his ass, may also be lazy and took the option that covers everything, whereas if he looked closer, might have been able to save a few bob

Thanks for your replies.
My builder friend who is doing some of the work & who ordered the timber phoned the timber merchant and importer today to check.
It seems that the stock comes in with a nominal grade of C18 then they re grade it as they see fit.
The main thing is they are sending the paperwork to prove it was C24 for us to give the BCO, to keep him happy.
The old roof was made of 6 *2 * about 4.4m, because we want to have a walkway over it and the snow loading we have to add a 8 *2 bolted to each then a warm roof with ply,80mm insulation, ply on top.
