Morning All

Now that summers arrived I can get on with some long overdue outside painting. Client wants me to do something - probably paint the lead flashings on the house. It's approx 10 years old has oxidised and by the looks of it been painted before. I've had a go cleaning it ( Nitromors hardly touched it ) and used oils etc but the final finish wasn't brill. Have seen some painted but with what ?

Looking on the net some people use Hammerite or Weathershield - but no exact /firm decision on this.

Can anyone offer some advice ?

Cheers

we use patination oil to shine lead but not sure if its been painted
i had a house years ago that had stone lintels with flowers carved on to them (or cast)
i painted the flowers with normal gloss paint and it lasted for 10 years
Hope this helps

Cheers for the advice LLL.

After much debate I did have a go with the oil but as it's been painted before it didn't look right. Cleaned leadwork with a mixture of white spirit and brick cleaner and then got some slate grey flexable exterior gloss from Johnstones. They advised not to undercoat it ( I really wanted a satin / matt finish ) and this would take the shne down a bit and it was a better product then a hammerite paint - for this application. Have explained this to the customer and mentioned that I can't forcast how long it'll last - she's Ok with this and more than happy with how it looks now.

So I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

I tried hammerite on some new lead and it flaked after a couple years.
I painted it to match the existing lead that had been there since the house was built in the 1930's. Not sure what paint they used in them days but it certainly worked.
Will give the Johnstones a go if I ever get around to doing redoing it.

Not much ave a craic; the oldens are the best...

A man walks into his bedroom with a sheep under his arm.His wife is lying in bed reading. The man says, "This is the pig I have sex with when you've got a headache."His wife replies, "I think you'll find that is a sheep."The man replies, "I think you'll find I was talking to the sheep."
