How far is the furthest you would travel for say a 6-10k job? ive the chance of a few that are 40miles away, cross country?
Is an 80 mile round trip a day too far?
I know you would try and cover it in the price, but this would obviously put your price up...

WE drove to braintree in essex from kings lynn norfolk for 6 months, 1hr 50mins each way, ive done london for 3-4 weeks at 107miles each way, all depend how you feel about driving, for 2 years i drove to norwich from kings lynn 45m each way 12 hour shift+1 hour each way, was on books in them days got travel money, hour travel is nothing if you need the work MSH

I find with kit etc to move that around 15 miles is as far as i want to go,have done 30 and even 40 on occasion but the logistics start stacking up against you
i.e. i pay about £4 for an underground 110mm connection
i was in a nowhere village called shefford,so i went to the local building supplies
he charged me £17
little things like that add up
of course if there is no work at all local,
would travel to the moon and back
money on the table every friday is what mrs lout wants

Yea ^ thats what i was thinking, id have to be super organised and efficient, one is complete steel frame building, from the site clearance to the cladding, 50 miles away in manchester, im going to have a look tommorow, see what i reckon i suppose.
The other is in leeds, even further away, full landscape job around some student buildings, fair size for us.

i drive 60 odd miles a day to our yard and back then on from there, not ideal but its what ive got.
for work on bigger jobs its harder, i know a firm that has a caravan does 5 days on site 2 days home. get the job done,
weve worked in bangor and wrexham, like 80 odd miles each way but its not ideal and infact is a pain trying to find new suppliers and hire places etc
p.s its a lot easier if you are single and child free i have to be back in sheffield to get my boy at 5.30pm 3 nights a week, serverly limits your traveling

ive travelled up to two hours eway a day . its a pain. two ways to look at it . do you need the work . if so go . if not dont.in the 80s i worked for a firm and the boss one day said i expect everyone to travel half an hour eway for me , after that i pay travel time which was fare.what you could do dn is finish an hour earlier to get back home nearly normal time

Depends on many other factors. How much profit you're making, if you really need the work or not, potential for more or repeat business, know anyone you could stay with? able to work late and bang the job out in a few days if you work from 7am - 10pm
To answer your question though, furthest I have gone is 50 miles, I made sure I was up early enough and left late enough to avoid bad traffic.

i worked in north london in the late 80s
had to be out the door by 5.45 and rarely got home before 6.00 but i was young and single and keen
and you got a lot better money then
I was getting £75 per day laying bricks in 1988
you have to remember beer was only £1ish a pint then and a packet of fags 2 quid
I used to live like a king on about £280 take home (for 2 days anyway )
anyway that would equate to around £840 in todays money so it was worth it
all i hear is lads working in the smoke for £110 a day so i wont be going

If i was up against it i would work for £110.00 per day - and i detest working for a day rate
I cant earn the same as on price jobs ie: make a bit off my men, a bit off the hired in plant, a bit off my grab wagon man and a bit off the materials,id rather go in with a lump sum price, Does anyone else work this way? Plus i like to a deal 
Im going to set my limit of 50 miles i think - ill look at both jobs see what happens, just got off the phone to the steel frame building fella, seems orite, ill give that one a whirl.

I'd be tempted to find cheap digs and put in some long days.
To spend hours at the wheel, burning diesel every day makes no sense to me.
I haven't had to work more than 30-40 mins from home for years except a few occasions in Somerset, Anglesey and Stranraer all in holiday cottages of people from round 'ere.

I work on a 2hr rule. If its longer then I price for some nice digs+abit of bonus.
Did a job near Glasgow a few months back, allowed for 2weeks work.
Started at 6:30 on a mornin an got back to digs at about 10ish ( 2:30am on the day of power floating) we were all worked to the bone but we managed to do it in a week.
Lads got 2weeks wages+bit of bonus+The digs money for the 4 nights we didn't stay.
Now they keep askin when the next job like thats coming up:laugh:

We do 60 miles with the operated plant hire, 15miles for the landscaping. Have done 100 miles for the plant hire on winter period

i used to do heathrow to eastbourne every day and a lot of w'kendd 200 miles round trip, made longer by the fact had to take m25. Done it for 4 years but had firms van and fuel card. some days 5hours travelling. Wasn't so bad getting there but going home was a nightmare. I stay now in digs.
