The wife and i all dressed up with poppy's on ready for the march. We where on our way to town and i suddenly thought ''are we a week early?'' Oh well at least we look the part .... :laugh:

just watched a programme and "muslims against crusades"want to protest next Sunday at St.pauls
its a sticky one as all those brave men died fighting for freedom
and yet these guys want to abuse them for the freedom they gave?
what a shame

Its good to remember the sacrifice that generation made for all of us. Take a moment to think of those who lost precious life so we can be free. The absolute best of british.

The young Radical muslims are just out to outrage, probably best to just ignore the little sh@#%, trouble is the Press give them a voice. They forget that if it wasn't for the losses in both World Wars, Britain probably wouldn't of required the large scale immigration policies of the 50's & 60's, those knobs would be living there lives in some hell hole, with no jobs, a corrupt autocratic Government and no health system woth talking about...actually that does sound a bit like were their living anyway!!

Setts I don't mean to be rude but the poppy is a British and Commonwealth symbol of rememberance not just an English one. I've been getting increasingly disillusioned with the whole build up to the 11th over the last few years I feel that the true meaning of what the poppy is about is being forgotten and there's a real millitancy among elements of the British public thats starting to creep in and cheapen it. A lot of these aguments kicking off are absolutely rubbish and it's like people are going around looking to start a fight with anyone seen to be not supporting it. The FA are an example of this I can guarantee that most of those playes couldn't give a toss about service men and women but they do give a toss about being seen to be wearing one so folk might think they're being seen to be doing the right thing it's never been an issue before so why now. Cheryl Cole on the Xfactor last year wore a poppy that was full of jewels and covered most of her chest thats not a mark of respect thats a look at me aren't I great statement. They say the poppy is non pollitical but it's rapidly becoming very much so with everyone trying to trip up those who don't wear it or may seem to be unsupporting I feed the jar everytime I see it but don't wear one but that doesn't make me in anyway a bad person although it's starting to be seen as unpatriotic to leave the house without wearing it. At the last count 14 colleagues from my time in the army have been killed in N/Ireland Africa and the Middle East most happened after I left but a couple were right in front of my eyes so who thinks they have the right to decide how I chose to mark this day in fact who has the right to tell anyone how they should mark it. It used to be a day of simple services and reflection with a dignified build up now it's become anything but with people letting their own vanity and selfishness and agendas sully it. As for the Radical muslims and anarchists the best thing to do is ignore them after all it's only a small bit of paper they're burning yes it's disrespectfull but they're hurting no one and will b#gger off if they're are starved of attention and they can protest all they want at St Pauls because the cenotaph is miles away.
To my mind the most disrespectfull thing you can do is forget what it's all about act in a way that is both undignified and cheap which accounts for a large portion of the population just now all this shouting and jostling is just a lesser form of conflict and isn't the whole point of the day about peace and reflection. I may have been a bit controversial there but I thought it needed saying.

similar scenario here pablo,stuck about 12 quid in various pots so far, but wont wear a poppy anymore
its like the great britain flag,when i was a kid and we had the queens silver jubilee street party that flag and the phrase "great britain" meant something
I think at that time the war meant something as it was still fresh in people's minds
i mentioned hitler to my daughter and her friend recently and they started giggling "what sort of name is hitter hahaha?"

the flag has been hijacked by the knuckledraggers
i am no leftie but i cant be arsed with all that " they are taking our jobs routine"
how can they take your job if you have never worked?
so no poppies, wristbands,ribbons,pin badges for me
money in the tin works a lot better for old soldiers than people putting 20p in and wearing it for 4 weeks as if they feel they were there
no offence to anyone that wears them but i feel its turned into a media frenzy

Couldn't agree more, I do wear a Poppy, but I feel for the right reasons, not some for some Boneheads reasons. The Poppy does'nt stand for nationalism or supporting Political adgendas. The symbol should remind people of the horror and suffering of conflict, not jingoistic crap. My grandfather served as an Infantryman through France, North Africa and Italy, seeing some of the worst Fighting of the War. He was a proud man, but not about the fighting, which he never spoke much about, but about the time served with his mates, and the sadness of lost friends. I can't begin to imagine the Horror of the First World War, although I've read a lot about it, the loss of so many people for who knows why, is a cause of great sadness and the Poppies message should be, if anything, about what remembering all those, most through no choice of their own, who gave their lives in all conflicts due to the weakness of Politics.

Its pretty sad its being associated with nationalism. Again, its the guilt card being played on one of our national emblems. I wear mine with pride, showing my support for ex-service men ,who make them, some with PTSD and cannot find a steady job. Also for all those who have died protecting the lives of those who cannot defend themselves

The problem I have is hen that most wars are not fought for ethical or moral reasons
most are over land ,commodities,religion ,and money
Germany lost WW1 because they ran out of money,my great grandfather died fighting the British
i still cannot work out why if teh majority of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi,with a couple of UAE and Yemen ,why did us and the Americans invade Iraq and afghan.
So many brave young men and women dying and being maimed in futile conflicts that cannot be won.
if our govt really cared about human rights then we would be bombing china,russia,indonesia and a whole host of other countries too big to pick a fight with....
both my grandads served in north Africa and Italy but rarely spoke of it,other than to say how big the Germans were and how well equipped they were,
In the states veterans (even those who have only served a short time) get a decent stipend for life
i read about a us military couple who both retired at 40 with $58,000 dollars a year for life adjusted for inflation and free health care.
maybe this GOVT could and should do more for its veterans

I understand what your saying, but the first thing that comes to my mind when seeing a poppy is the poor sod ,covered in blood and snot, dead in a ditch hundreds of miles from his family.
If I went into the ethics of it, Im sure I wouldn't even acknowledge the event :;):
