Does anyone know if there is a way of extending the external BT cable?
I want to move the master socket but there is not enough external cable.

i did mine by buying some fittings from wilkinsons of all places
not sure if they do it still but it was Very easy as i recall
You could also try cpc

Anything prior to the master socket is the property of BT, fiddle with it at your own risk!
But that's not to say I haven't repaired excavator-damaged underground BT cabling with heat shrink crimp connectors before

That's true and BT engineers are targeted to make money by raising charges wherever possible.
If you get some external wire to match the existing and a proper external connector then you'll be probably be ok.
Start using internal wiring/ junction boxes and you could be in trouble when it starts to fail in a few years.
I'm in telecomms but I only do internal work. External work is done by Openreach and they are run as a seperate company so I can't get any of the stuff even for myself 
A possibilty is find where the external wiring enters the building and connect the master socket there.
Then connect your own wiring to another socket, you can run it back outside externally if you want.
Just remember that if it a later date you do get a fault to disconnect your own wiring and check for dial tone at the master socket before reporting it to BT.

wouldnt it just be easier to ring BT and ask them to do it?
IIRC everything I have had done is very reasonable

Get some Cat 5 or Cat6 cable, on the master at the back it will be two terminals A&B , make a note of which colour cable goes to which
Blue / blue-white or could be orange orange-white. With you new bit of cable install it and move the master to me location, connect up as it was in the original location. Go to where it was an strp back the new cable to reveal the coloured pairs, now when you connect up strip the ends back and twist together, blue to blue or what ever colour BT have used, if you can solder the connections and tape up, if you can't solder block connector will do, tape it up well if the connection is out side,
Better still if you can leave the current master in place and add another one to it, , I have some new BT masters if you need one

Forgot to mention, make sure you don't have hold of one of the wires, if someone rings in, it will give you a tickle,
