Hi Fellas,

Ive been interested in tree work and arboriculture for ages and it was what i wanted to do when i left school but i was offered a job in construction and took that...

I do a bit of logging and bits and bats, but am i operating illegally if i just turn up with a saw and fell or bough a tree or do you actually need the certification to chop a tree up?

I dont do any climbing or sectional dismantling work or anything near houses ets, just "theres a dead tree in a field Dan will you cut it down please" sort of thing

Ive looked at the aboriculture courses and there a bleedin fortune and about 10 different tickets to be fully qaulified also 3 years full time.

You can just get a ticket to say your safe with a saw, am i ok with just that?

I do it more out of enjoyment than a money making venture, just wanted your thoughts

Do not go down the tree work route unless it's going to be your only job. I am talking from experience once you've paid all you're insurance/ training/ equipment /hire / vehicle expenses unless you're at it full time you'll be bleeding money. I'm still ticketed but not insured I love doing tree work but only do the very basic stuff now everything else is subbed. A ticket for saw use doesn't cover felling /topping/ pruning or bucking it just covers cutting a felled and bucked log at ground level. Everything needs a separate grading and ticket with log books aswell it's just not worth the hassle and money unless you're full time and busy.

As long as you don't get caught :p
You need a high vis vest, hard hat, public liability insurance and 3 different licenses to fart in public now :p

dan i did my chainsaw course about 15 years ago, and have never been asked to produce the certificate by anyone. Its supposed to be a legal requirement.
I do in fact to felling, and pruning, and am self taught. Have the ropes, harness etc. again, never been asked to produce anything.
I wouldn't worry about it. just carry on logging and doing light felling. everyone else seems to be!
