Hi
I would like to put down a hoggin or self binding gravel surface over quite a large area (pedestrians only i garden, with the odd bicycle or ride on lawn mower). Am I right in thinking that self bound gravel does not give a permeable surface whereas hoggin does? or is it not that simple?
Presuming both on 100mm Type 1 sub base....
I would be grateful for any advice from anyone

hoggin has been pretty much discredited on here
mud and grit is NOT a good surface
dont know much about selfbinding gravels but hear breedon is the best
I would use 100 mm type 1 then 20mm of 10mm gravel local to you
cheers LLL

The trouble with the word 'Hoggin' is that its in all the designers text books. I haven't met an architect yet that actually knew what it was and seam to have SBG in their minds eye. I've never seen Hoggin myself but then I come from the north and we have no need for such inferior things ;-)
SBG's I have used and work are
Raisby - IMAG
Breedon - Breedon Aggregates
Ironstone - Dunarbon, Cambridge
Derbyshire gold - Long Rake Spa
CEDEC - CED

All are porous to an extent but allow for fall for surface drainage
