Not long ago, before I invested in Sat Nav, I was looking for an address in Gornal, which incase you don't know is deepest darkest Black Country, not far from Merry Hill. I stopped to ask an oldish bloke the way and he told me to "Goo dowen the rood and tern reet at the stopngoose, an youm on it" those were his exact words. I nodded nervously and said thanks and set off looking for a pub called the Stopen Goose. It was only after about 15 mins of looking for the Fe@*%ng thing I realised he'd meant Traffic Lights!!
:p

Mick you might remember seeing the old guy who used to thumb a lift on the Wolverhampton rd ( think i've wrote this before) We seen him and thought poor f*****, so we stopped and asked: where he was going. He said "i've gorra get to the day centa in Ladywood before them close to get fed." So we got him in drove for miles out of our way and got him there, had a whip round and gave him a few quid. Week later we where on our way to Wolvo' and the same old bloke was there. We again stopped and asked: where you going. He said " got to get to the wolvo' day centre for something to eat....blah, blah, blah," bless him. Crack was he used to do that all day long up to wolvo', then back to Brum, drop him outside the place, of course he did'nt go in every time.
Most people would stop, feel sorry for him and weigh him in with a few bob. Ha, ha, i thought it was excellent, good on the old boy, he used to have a few stories make you crack up. must of been 70ish. :;): do they still aynuk and aliy cartoon in the express and star.iI heard the real aliy died ?

To be fair to, I live on the edge of the Black country, and I like the place, good Beer, People are sound(well most of them), good dry sense of humour, not so sure about Orange chips and faggots and gray pease, but generally a sound area.... But they are feckin mad.. what's with all the Ponies everywhere. Apparantly the Black Country dialects and Northumbrian are the closest to original Old English surviving. I think some of them are still Old English, it's like stepping back in time in some places.

sorry mate rambling again, I've got up too early. I do remember the old boy who lived on the Island in Wolvo, but not the one you mean I think. He became a tourist attraction!!
Yes aliy has died recently, there was probably some kind of big funeral, and no doubt we'll have a special Black country "Bonk" Holiday, we could do with another one.
