forget the weight of the disco,i'm talking a 6t load on an iforwilliams trailer with greedy boards-no problemo.

mine is the old type 300tdi
got what i could afford but would have preferred a TD5
If you use it for towing commercially as it is a domestic car not a commercial vehicle you dont need a tacho.
The hire company I use for mini digger has a disco 3 and uses that for towing machine so they dont have to put tachos on their wagons.

They still need one in the disco i'm afraid. The tacho rule is one i studied extensively after being pulled over on the M11 for an hour to prove if i did or did not require one.

I'm with the "run it til it dies brigade"
Had this darling from 3 mths old in 1987 - pulls like a train - only done 75,000 - been to the mountains a couple of times.
Suddenly, bodywork starting to go home - some serious welding needed for next mot. (You see loads of these old Patrols going strong in the mountains - must be the lack of humidity thing on the bodywork?)

I'm sure the max towing weight of the Disco is 3500kg - trailer+load.
Check out this table Discovery 2001 Towing Weights

Dan is correct about the tacho, any vehicle over 3.5t gross train weight used for hire or reward needs one
if you get away with it all well and good, but the day will come, look in any travis perkins tool hire transits or cabstars, also speedy and hewden they all have tacho's
the only exemption is for private use such as a horse box,or towing a private trailer, any buisness use needs one,but you only need to put a disc in when trailer is being pulled, then your on lorry driving rules soon as trailer is off back to drive as you like
my mate has a classic wedding car buisness and had to fit a tacho in his land cruiser at a cost off £1000+vat,another local man had a 1.5t mini excavator behind his transit police made him take it off and get it collected because of no tacho, its a finable offence too
if VOSA pull you up you will not get away with it, MSH

I have a disco p reg, there is no towing weight on the plate in engine compartment, all the spaces are left blank, I was told it could tow 3ton
but you cant tow and exceed 7.5 ton gross train weight anyway
because you then get into HGV thats why you cant tow a 3 ton mini digger,
mine has to go on the back off my 7.5 ton lorry and im just in weight mistsubushi canter can carry 3.8 ton

Dan & MSH are correct on the tachos and believe me if your caught your cussed, one of our drivers filled his out incorrectly and was stopped by the police, £1500 fine, 6 points same with overloading, min 4 figure fine plus points as these laws are designed for HGV`s. the police`s latest one is to pull over maintenance vans are they normally have shelves and lock boxes etc, that add a hell of a lot of weight to your standered van.

speaking of towing and tachos, the work have me a VW Transporter, mwb pulling a 2.7t ifor trailer. the vans have been pulled a few times, from vosa and traffic alike, and never mentioned anything about tachos so im told. so i take it im in the firing line for the fine and points for the firm not fitting them to the motor?
