Wagon and drag is the future; it is a multi-purpose vehicle.

Reading that mick, it suggests I could buy a 6.3 tonner and not require a tacho?

youd be fine for your work, but when delivering the crushers you'd need to use a tacho

spot on giles. I put them on the back of my truck at the moment, which means i am under the 3500kg for this rule. If i got a larger truck i would be stuffed. I would have to keep a small truck for deliveries, and that would be costly
My new truck, which is arriving in march, I have decided not to have a tacho fitted. Its £600 and i never use the one i have, as i always avoid trailer towing for hire and reward.

Here's a question for those who own 7.5 t lorries.

What (very roughly) does one cost per year to run, not talking mpg, I'm talking tacho, o licence and any other related costs, I'd need someone to maintain the thing for me.

It would make things easier without a doubt.

My employer charges 87p per mile. Should add that is the cost of driver/maintanence included but covering well over 100 miles per day. Think 3-5 deliverys per day.

the scaffolders have to put theirs in for checks every 6 weeks
costs around £250 a time
plus they have to meet emissions standards to drive into london or its £200 a day
the emissions upgrade costs around £2000

my 7.5t costs £175 tax £486 insurance, mot variable usually about £400, saftey checks every 12 weeks £52+vat takes a hour at designated service garage, use of a yard for o/liecence £1.5 per day makes it easy as don't need my own yard space to fit VOSA spec
no london as lorry is to old to go there
to get o liecence you need to specify a garage that does the work but i would not be without it for 3 ton excavator transport and carting stuff in and out of jobs MSH :)

My six weekly inspections cost me around £200 as they seem to always find and repair something. Insurance is about a grand a year. Mot is usually about a grand a year. Have to rent a bit of space on a farm for operators centre . Always had one I think I would find it hard to manage with out one. Definitely speeds my job up.

Looking at it, I would be able to get a restricted o licence.

Does that mean less frequent inspection? I could cope with every 10 weeks but every 6 would be a right pain.

Tough for me at the moment as I really don't know if it would be worth it, I'm about 70% sure it would be. I suppose that's the risk you take isn't it.

I'm also guessing that I could put a digger on the back as well?

Like the look of the mitsubishi canters, heard they are very good and they are quite small as well which would be nice.

Chatting to a bloke today who does crushed, soil, sand etc says his is on 12 weeks and can't see why someone like me wouldn't be.
I'm going to call vosa next week and see what they say. I could cope with 12 weeks but 6 is pushing it.

Mine is a cantor and carrys 3.9t if I dont carry ramps for digger about, otherwise it 3.4t
Parts are not cheap but they are very reliable
I cant see any reason for 6 week safety inspections on a builders lorry as your not a full time operater on a blue operators licence but thats only my view MSH :)
