That photo would have been taken around 82/83. Trying to find the photo showing one of the banks being dug out that was well over head height when digging out the lower sections a series of scaffold boards were used to creat a run from the bottom it was the 7 to 10 year olds job to push the full wheel barrows up the ramps

Split59, I am assuming you mean workhouse as against school, and 1882 and not 1982:laugh:

I really enjoyed the work at school and really do believe In some sort of national service working like this to install some sort of discipline and a well grounded work ethic . The bleeding hearts and artists out there won't allow it though. Even though I think truthfully it would be a great benefit and enjoyed by quite a number

Looks like great fun. I bet some laughs were had doing that!
Doesn't make any sense why it stopped happening. So many spin off areas of education that it could inspire people to want to learn about, girls too. Not just the physical building stuff but maths, architecture, design, engineering etc. Such a shame. I was too young to be part of that!

Not trying to put you down but whilst you where at boarding school enjoying yourself doing nude concreting, other kids of 13 from poor under privileged back grounds ( me included ) were out working for a living to keep from starving. Didn't have the luxury of supplied wellies and overalls.

The boarding school was what was called an approved school unfortunately it's major failing was the wide range of pupils there were some like me who could not read or write due to what is now called dyslexia and some marked as trouble makers who had what would now be called autistic or adhd
. There were boys on their last chance before borstal, some were there as they were in care and it saved on taking up spaces in a children's homes and some were there for there own protection because at home they would have been bêaten half to death the bruises that some of the boys came back with would shock anybody. It tried to do be to much to too many but what it did install In all of us was a sense of discipline and a decent. Work ethic. There were only 2 kids there in my time that their parents paid and both lived in the principles flat both were very wealthy one was a multi millionaire in his own right he came from the gala strip and had been shelshocked by the fighting he used to come back to school by helicopter that was in the 70s early 80s
