I dont get why someone who wants a job done in the house just gets anyone to come and do it, they dont even know who they are or what they can do..

im sorry if i sound a twat but i had to have a brickie in my house and he gave me a price i asked about local jobs he had done and even went round and spoke to the owners who told me "he is a good brickie but a little messey" you will need to sweep up once he is done.. another place said he is reliable and does a fair job look at my wall..

Once i had that information i then called him back and asked him when he could start..

Im not a contractor and dont even attempt to try and be one im just a "DIY"er but im sorry if my patio started to turn out like that i would have said something at the time not wait untill its all down and complete, this is obvious to anyone that this is not a great jod so why not just say something to the contractor while its all going tlts up.

i laid my own patio with alot of help from the guys and girls on here and i would be tempted to say to the contractor "how can we sort this so you dont come back" and bung him a couple hundred quid and leave all behind for you to sort yourself.

Like i say im no contractor but i do know that price is just way to cheap for a job of that size and it should have been a no go from the start.

its jobs like this that make me happy i laid my own patio with the FREE help and advice from the forum members of this site.

im sorry but would have to rip it all up and start again as i could not look at it every day as it would just wind me up..

i'm just looking for honest opinions on the work done, of course i've rushed into getting the job done without realising how much a proper job should have cost (mistake) and now ended up regretting it.
i live near manchester, if anyone can quote me for sorting the mess out.
i've told the bloke the job hasn't been carried out with reasonable care and skill and i will pay him any balance left when i've got the job sorted by someone else. might end up going through the courts now though.

Who's taking who to court? You because of his shoddy work or him because you haven't paid him? If it's you taking him to court, why bother, you have the materials, if the guys not coming back to claim them, just pay someone else to lay them properly and move on, cos you certainly don't want the same guy back to put it right, he couldn't do it first time round.

was just guessing he might want to take it to court to try and get payment off me.
the comments on here have been great though.
really appreciate the unbiased opinions expressed about the work that was done.

Forget court. Its not worth you taking him to court and vice versa. Put it down to experience and move on

its a minefield whatsgoinon,legally you have to give him the opportunity to put it right,he can probably put a CCJ on you which will play merry havoc with your credit ratings
I know you dont want to hear this but it would be best to come to some sort of arrangement
probably Â£350 of material there ( a guess) so maybe pay that and move on
like a lot of people that do poor work i am sure his intention wasnt bad,he just wasnt up to the job

Lll is right mate, pay him his material. You could then save yourself a bit of cash, if that's an issue, lift the slabs back up yourself, you could even prep it and just get someone to lay them again.
