Sick??? What sort of friends do you think we have! lol
The staining is so random it seems improbable. Also a lot of the marks weren't anywhere near the tables that were on there. The people were generally at the tables rather than wandering aimlessly with drinks.
If it WAS drink, I would have thought the soapy water scrub would at least have faded the marks and it hasn't at all.

Without seeing the stains with the naked eye, hard to say, a couple do look a little bit like grease/animal fat type staining, IE dropped food, but that photo of the big area of staining looks more like a drink type stain. If it was drink spillage, would it have been wine or a beer type drink?

Possibly but the marks are all so different in size and over such a spread I'm sure they can't all be drink or food. Some are just small dots/blobs, others are larger areas (up to about 8") and some are in an area that has hardly been walked on and certainly wasn't used on the occasion in question.
We're totally baffled.
I've got a jet washer, but haven't tried it on there yet as I'm worried I may cause even more problems!

Are any of the stains in an out the way type area, where you could do some tests?

Sorry, meant to let you know today.
I emailed the company you recommended and they seem to think that it is grease marks. They suggested trying a grease remover which can be purchased from a builders merchant.
It's been so wet lately that it is hard to tell if there has been any change in the marks.
I'm going to leave it until we can have a good look at them again, then try something.
Thanks for your advice, much appreciated.
