my mate just got rid of his L200,he said its nice to have a car /pick up hybrid,but he was putting 40 quid in the tank every week and the missus on the school run was eating that
nissan micra for school run now

do you really need a pick up?

Giles I'm talking with my cold hard cash out and out business head here. Admittedly they probably suit you with the miles you do outside of work but as for towing the suspension is to soft and the tyre walls to tall and floppy to do it well. I wouldn't have a Transit near me Iveco's are what I use they're cheap tough powerful and brilliant for towing the heavy stuff they have class leading towing capacities and are a good buy when they're 2 years old. Wife has a nice car that I use now and again and claim 50% of the costs of it against the business. Being Scottish I hate the thought of not maximising my profits.

yeah but you make a sweeping statement about vanity when for me its the best tool for the job, i do 500 miles a week for business, and my navara suits me down to the ground can carry 4 lads if i need, do the miles to work see jobs etc, tow the machines around, my navara happily pull 4 ton and brake well etc, its small enough to park, its 4x4 for the jobs we do in the country side or sites like the rugby club job, i can tow a trailer to a job loaded with fencing, tow into into the field and work straight out of it, etc. drives nice its comfy etc. if i need to move bigger stuff i have wagons or tractors i can pick up for the day.

so it suits me life and work very well, might not suit you the way you work but to dismiss them as only a choice of vanity is not fair

Strictly speaking no I don't "need" it but then I don't "need" any cars if I sorted public transport, arranged delivery of materials, in advance on site, etc, etc. javascript:%20InstaSmilie()
Pickup, in my eyes, is a great trade off; as well as uses mentioned prior, I've got two log-burners to save on central heating so forever picking up green logs to store/dry and trying to get best seasoned logs and check & collect instead of getting shite delivered.
Previous method was £3k's worth of IW trailer and V8 90 (great fun but bloody expensive to run & maintain) - never did have the heart to work out that combo's MPG

If it's not vanity Giles why don't you run the bog standard one then instead of the expensive one they both do the same thing and would fulfill your needs the same way. Like I said I wasn't poking a stick or anything like that just the vast majority of owners of these wagons don't need em.

Agree Hilux best but after Top Gear did what they did with it, its probably 20-25% more expensive than equivalent models!!
As for "vanity"; nonsense!! I don't give a sh*t what people think/judge of me. I am what I am and others can take it or leave it as they see fit. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as am I with mine! I feel I've more than justified/explained my reasons for a 4*4 in my earlier posts?
I'm happy to debate/discuss my requirements as a side issue but in the 1st instance I was just after all you guys recommendations on 4*4's you'd used/owned.....

because i only have one car, and like the bluetooth, sat nav and mp3 functionality, but i hate all the polished ones i see with big alloys etc. there are more of the outlaws and aventuras around for sale from the lads that have them that dont need them. dad has the standard spec king cab and his fabric seats have worn alot worse than mine on half the miles.

like the pic on the 1st page mines always filth, statched, dented, and inside man!! 2 lads eating lunch in it every wet day i think they might have found more biological weapons in there than iraq haha

although we run a cabstar and an escort van (which i abhor but does 45 to the gallon)
what i am saying is similar to pablo in that how often do you need to pick gear up?
most of our suppliers deliver free of charge and its only the odd tonne of stone or such that we have to pick up,its just handy when needed
bearing in mind we do this 5 1/2 days a week
my mate that had the L200 also has a vw transporter and liked the idea of getting the VAT back on what was essentially a family car with a large open boot
however the running costs soon ate in to the novelty
nobody bar farmers or people towing most of the time need 4 by 4 s in this country
the 4 days of snow a year dont justify the extra fuel bills year round
if your log supplier mugs you off then back them to him
round here its about £65 for a full load delivered,that does about a month to 6 weeks i am told
also an online mob do it

but only YOU know what your needs are ,but be aware of running costs

That was the old hi-lux, and tbf, all the japanese pick-ups would have survived.
As a mate found out, not only are the toyotas more expensive, you don't get half the stuff the others offer as standard, plus the insurance is dearer. this is a hang up from the days when boy racers used to chav them up!

Im exacty with Giles with this, i have mine as i only want to run one car, but i can see where your coming from Pablo, probably a little bit of vanity with me, but i dont care i graft everyday of the week most of the time and if i wanna go and spend a wedge of my hard earned cash i will do because i like the truck.

still say the l200 is a good bit of kit, my mate runs a sand blasting company an regularly carry a ton on the back plus trailer. granted he has had to change the springs twice (leaf).

springs on the l200 easy job and only about 200, can get uprated ones if you look around i broke mine with almost 2 ton of breaker off a 13 tonner, didn't want to leave it on site after a transit had called on asking for scrap, 10k breaker vs damage to car.
