For some strange reason, we get comparatively few posters of the female persuasion in the Brew Cabin (remember Mercedes, anyone??), but around 60-66% of the emails and phone calls that come in are from the distaff side.

A good number run along the lines of ...."My husband was wondering if....", so maybe it's a matter of the lady of the house doing the admin and/or embarrassment and an inability to admit to a lack of knowledge on the part of the man - a bit like the legendary male disinclination to ask for directions when hopelessly lost. :D

Amy - that was TarMac lady. I haven't heard from her for a couple of years but I know her company had more or less given up on the European market.

As I was discussing with another US-based civil engineer only last week, the roads we build in Europe are far superior to those in the US, partly because we use a 40 year design life, rather than their 20 year span, but also because the understanding of blacktop is more advanced and we have a more competitive industry, according to him, than the "this has worked for the last 50 years" attitude of companies in the States.

I know some guys who went to the states 9/10 years back trying to sell no-dig technology to small/medium sized companies, they struggled for a good few years because of that very same attitude.

`Pops and grandpa always used a shovel or backhoe, and so will i` :)

ace chadwick was of the female variety IIRC
i forgot about tarmac lady, wonder how she is?
the roads in america are fantastic in some places and pishpoor in others, arkansas is a place i recall for really crap roads, whereas georgia's roads were spot on,all depends how rich the state is

Also wish they all still popped in - Tarmac Lady was total knowledge & straight to the point.
Ace seemed ace with the legal side...

As for Mercedes, she was in a few posts, some amazing, new-age great grand-daughter of James Joyce like, with sub-conscious stream of words...but it all sort of held together.
I thought she was a gifted writer.... I'm sure the gaffer will have collated "The Mercedes Papers"

ps - just found the best...

I know I was on the point of creating a new 'group' for Mercedes.....Fruit loop!

There was one guy last year for whom I did actually create the group "Tithead" and he's the only member to date.

That was him. I tried to find his name, but the database doesn't seem to allow me to search based on group.

I was never sure if he was a troll or just...well... a tithead!
